Every classroom has plans for tornadoes, fires, and lockdowns, but few have plans for student escalations - despite student escalations occurring significantly more frequently than the other stressors. Having a clear plan that is taught, practiced, and followed is a great way to prevent secondary trauma for students as well as staff.
A good saftey plan for student behavior should 1) tell the students what the adult will do, 2) tell the students what they should do, and 3) end with the return to learning (providing debriefing between 2 and 3 if needed). Post the plan in classrooms, teach and practice the plans regularly like you would a fire drill (just don't have anyone pretend to be the escalated student!), and then when you need it, follow the plan. What you'll often find is that you may feel like a hot mess in the end, but your students are ready to go on with the day because they felt buffered by you following the expected plan!
